It’s spring! Steam your face already

How much of a cliché is the phrase “petal-soft skin”? (I should know; at some point, I probably used it.) And yet, there’s something irresistible about the idea of stroking one’s cheek and thinking, “My, how positively FLORAL I feel.” We all want crazy-soft and smooth skin, do we not?

We all want crazy-soft and smooth skin, do we not?

This is why I was so intrigued by Maijan’s facial steams, which use actual rose petals (plus rosemary leaves, fennel seeds, peppermint leaves, and geranium oil) to treat your skin right. The idea is to add a couple of spoonfuls of the mixture to a bowl of hot water, then cover your head and bowl with a towel. Breathe in, and as the fragrant aroma sends you into bliss-out mode, the steam will add moisture to your skin.

Contrary to popular belief, steam won’t “open” your pores — they don’t open and close — but it does loosen dead skin cells and prep your skin for a peel. I follow my steam with Tata Harper’s Resurfacing Mask, and when the whole relaxing process is over, my skin has a lovely glow. You could even say it looks, um, rosy. Flowery prose, but you get the idea.

Maijan Nourish Healing Herbal Facial Steam, $24; Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask, $55.
